Philip Thomas · San Antonio

About

Philip Thomas is a documentary wedding photographer based in San Antonio, photographing weddings across Texas, New York and further afield with a quiet, unposed eye.

Approach

I came to weddings from press photography in the UK, and I have never really stopped working that way. The approach is observation rather than direction: I am after the candid moments, the real emotion and the small in-between details that give a wedding its character. Originally from England, accent still intact, I have called San Antonio home since 2006.

On the day I work quietly and keep a low profile. I will step in for the family formals and guide a portrait when it is needed, but that is a small part of the story. The rest of it happens on its own: the laughter, the stillness, the tears. You do not have to perform for any of it. Ignore me where you can, and for couples who want more discretion, privacy and NDA arrangements can be made in advance.

I photograph on Leica M rangefinders, digital and film, and on a large-format Mamiya RZ67 — small, quiet cameras that suit the way I see. The pictures tend towards the natural, the timeless and the moody, especially in black and white. Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand taught me patience and timing, and the work has since been recognised by the WPJA, Fearless Photographers, ISPWP and This Is Reportage, and inducted into The Knot's Best of Weddings Hall of Fame.
